Dwayne: A Tale from Existentia

Dwayne tells the surreal tale of a young woman whose life is upended when she wakes up one morning to find a 15-ton boulder sitting quietly—ominously—in her living room.

Unable to explain how it got there, or why, she wants the creepy rock gone. But the insurance company won’t help her remove it, so the immovable monolith in the center of her home becomes her new roommate. Over time, she forms an uneasy bond with the rock she names Dwayne. Soon, she’s internet famous as “Rock Girl,” thriving socially and embarking on her first romantic adventures in years.

But then Dwayne reveals that he’s not as immovable as he once seemed…

Readers of Franz Kafka, Kurt Vonnegut, and Etgar Keret will enjoy Dwayne: A Tale from Existentia. So will anyone who enjoys existential discomfort paired with a good chuckle. This is the first story from the forthcoming collection by IPPY-award-winning author Lynsey G, featuring cover art and chapter-opener illustrations by Jayel Draco.

  1. Dwayne was the first title I had read from Oneshi Press, I didn’t really know too much about the pre-existing mythos that was slowly unveiled through the Kickstarter campaign … and that didn’t affect my enjoyment at all ! This is a very unique story that is really easily accessible to a new reader, and no doubt smirk-inducing to anyone who has some familiarity with Oneshi’s other stories.

I had a lot of enjoyment with the way in which the protagonist muses openly about what both the real world around her and the social media world she becomes more and more a part of as her infamy grows throughout the story as her ridiculous situation unfolds is held in check by the cold basic non-phased even to raise an eyebrow insurance agent trying to work out what form to fill in or what policy addendum to refer to work out what to do. Meantime she worries about her online dating profile responses with the same thought processes whether or not her house guest is a rock or a boulder … its so utterly bizarre but written so well it doesn’t come across as otherworldly fantasy.

The characters are all relatable and as an intro to Lynsey’s imagination its absolutely perfect. I’m so glad I picked this up, and you won’t regret it either. Its a great short story that stands on its own if you want, or gives you a foot into the door of its own modern day “Eerie, Indiana” sort of reality if that’s what you want.
